Our History

Junior League of Columbus History: A Legacy of Service

The Junior League of Columbus history dates back to 1931 when a group of 61 dedicated women came together to form the Community Service League. In their first year alone, they contributed an impressive 4,595 volunteer hours, laying the foundation for a long-lasting impact. Just five years later, in 1936, the organization joined the Association of Junior Leagues of America. This partnership connected them with like-minded women nationwide, all committed to strengthening their communities through volunteerism.

Today, the Junior League of Columbus has grown to over 750 Active and Sustaining members. Collectively, our Active members contribute more than 5,000 volunteer hours each year. Over the decades, we have also invested more than $1 million into projects that address critical local needs and improve the lives of those in our community.

Our Impactful Initiatives

Throughout Junior League of Columbus history, we have spearheaded and supported numerous projects that continue to make a difference:

  • Healthcare Initiatives: We opened the first pediatric wing at the old City Hospital and created children’s playrooms at the Medical Center.
  • Historic Preservation: We helped establish the Historic Columbus Committee and played a key role in saving the Springer Opera House and other historic landmarks.
  • Medical Support: We provided significant funding to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Medical Center.
  • Cultural Enrichment: We contributed to the children’s Transformations Gallery at the Columbus Museum.
  • Family Support: We played a vital role in bringing the Ronald McDonald House to Columbus.
  • Basic Needs Assistance: We founded the city’s first registered diaper bank, helping families in need.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to build upon the Junior League of Columbus history, our commitment to service remains stronger than ever. Through volunteer action, collaboration, and leadership development, we empower women to drive meaningful change. With each project, we strive to make Columbus a better place for all.
